Vehicle registration via the Internet – the majority of the population in Germany are not yet familiar with it

Share

  • The possibility of registering, de-registering and re-registering vehicles via the Internet is largely unknown. 70% of respondents would be prepared to do this and the majority can imagine driving off immediately without seals and stickers using only the digital vehicle registration document
  • Only a quarter of the respondents would like to use the online ID function for registration – at 64%, the vast majority of citizens prefer simple identification procedures
  • These are the results of a representative survey conducted by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of Verimi GmbH

Berlin, November 15, 2023: Vehicle registration can be carried out entirely online, but the majority of the population is not yet aware of this, according to representative study results. Internet-based vehicle registration can make the approximately 20 million registration processes per year easier for citizens and save a lot of time, travel and fees. The vehicles can then be driven on the road immediately with the digital registration certificate – even without seals, stickers and registration papers for 10 days. According to the survey, 52% of respondents can already imagine driving off straight away with the digital registration certificate they have printed out themselves and without seals and stickers.

According to the survey, only 26% of respondents would use the online ID function on their ID card to prove their identity online – the majority of the population (64%) favor other methods of online identification. While the portals of the registration authorities often only accept the online ID function of the ID card, more and more providers, such as insurance companies, vehicle dealers, registration services and online platforms with Verimi, are allowing citizens to use a selection of simple procedures for identification in the registration process. This is made possible by the connection to the central key account interface (GKS) of the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).

Verimi supports major customers of the KBA with user-friendly identification procedures so that all citizens have access to digital vehicle registration. Citizens can use the Verimi ID wallet, their online banking access, the photo of their ID card with a selfie, the classic video procedure and, of course, the online ID card (eID) for identification. In on-site service at car dealerships, insurance agents and registration services, the employees there can use the Verimi Local-Ident procedure to identify vehicle owners in the digital registration process. In addition to natural persons, the Verimi solution also allows legal entities, i.e. primarily companies and associations, to register their vehicles in the digital process.
