Digital driving licence for the smartphone: Now available in the Verimi ID Wallet

Share

  • Simply put your driving licence in your smartphone  –  in the personal digital wallet
  • Show driving licence data or transmit digitally to partner companies
  • Verimi ID wallet now extended for use of mobility apps

Berlin, June 24th, 2022. The digital driving licence on the smartphone is here! From now on, Verimi users can store their verified driving licence data in the Verimi app. Users can then easily provide their driving licence online via the stored data, e.g. for the use of carsharing, rental or fleet vehicles. In addition, the verified driving licence data can be read intuitively and easily on the smartphone as a “show-your-screen” for everyday use. The photo of the driving licence document will also be available shortly.

Verimi is thus adding another document to the ID Wallet app. So far, users have already been able to store their verified ID card, passport, COVID certificate and personal data such as their e-mail address, phone number and tax number securely on their smartphone.

“Driving licence data in the Verimi ID Wallet is an important step towards a completely digital customer experience when using mobility services,” says Roland Adrian, Managing Director of Verimi. “To realize the full potential of a digital driving licence, the legal framework still needs to be adapted. Nevertheless, as a pioneer, we made a conscious decision to realize the use cases for the mobility industry that are already possible today and to offer our ID Wallet users a secure place for their digital driving licence data.”

In the Verimi app, users verify their driving licence using the Photo-Ident process. To do this, they take a picture of the front and the back of their driving licence and then a selfie. The AI-supported process takes less than a minute and the data is confirmed within seconds. German as well as many international driving licences can be stored in the Verimi Wallet. Currently, Verimi supports the common driving licence class B, which covers motor vehicles up to 3,500 kilograms with some exceptions.

After the federal government withdrew its ID wallet app with the digital driver’s license in September 2021, Verimi is now the first provider to offer a comprehensive ID wallet for the relevant ID documents, driver’s license and COVID certificates. Users place the personal documents in their personal ID wallet in a verified and secure manner. The security of the platform has been verified by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), among others.

Currently, only physical documents are officially accepted, hence the digital driving licence serves as an addition. This is regulated in section 2 of the Road Traffic Act (German StVG) for the driving licence. The planned amendment to EU Regulation No 910/2014 is intended to create a framework for a European digital identity, which shall make it possible to also be able to identify via digital documents in EU member states. This amendment is currently being discussed at EU level.
